  • OCing CPU to use 1866 Mhz RAM

Hey guys, so I'm about to buy some new parts for a new build and I have a few questions about CPU supported memory frequency.

    RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tem=20-231-460
    G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR

    CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103727
    AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX

    Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128514
    GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Anyways the Motherboard supports a native memory standard of DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 and the RAM is 1866. However, I am not sure the CPU will be able to use the RAM to its full potential. From the AMD support page, the highest supported memory frequency is 1333 Mhz, although I have heard that the CPU can be overclocked to support a higher frequency. However, I have only heard of people OCing to accomodate up to 1600 Mhz. Would this CPU be able to use the RAM at 1866 Mhz? And if so, how would I go about doing this?

    Thank you for your time.

The 965 will normally manage 1600 all right, so would try that first - follow the instructions here:

    http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=7688

though after setting the freq to 1600, set the timings on these sticks to 8-9-8-28

would it be able to manage 1866 though? If not, I might as well save some money and get the 1600 one.

It might, but generally the 965 can run 1600, over that depends on the skill of the user (and their time and patience)
