  • G.Skill Ares compatibility with X58 ?

    Hello,

    My current rig is :

    - Motherboard : Asus P6T (X58/LGA 1366)
    - CPU : INTEL Core i7 920 QUAD CORE (@ 3.6 Ghz) + Noctua NH-D14
    - RAM: G.Skill Kit Extreme3 2 x 2 Go PC10600 Ripjaws CAS 7 (DUAL CHANNEL)
    - GPU : SLI MSI GTX 460 Hawk (@840 Mhz)
    - SSD : Intel X-25M Postville 160 Go
    - OS : Windows Seven 64 bits Version Boite Home Premium

I plan to replace my memory to get 8 Gb of RAM, so my choice is this kit :
    [ ARES ] F3-2133C9D-8GAB
    http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=488&c1=1&c2=3

seems a good one, great frequency, good CAS and timings. And they aren't too high so it will be good if I add more ram.

My question is very simple : does Ares are compatible with X58 motherboards ?

If yes, I think I can make dual or tri-channel if I buy more memory ? (3x4 or 4x4 ?).

    Thank you.

Yes, they'll work but will have to put in the timings manually as the XMP settings are ver 1.3

      Thank you for the answer.

Just one more thing : about frequency, does it will run at 2133 Mhz or I have to tweak it in to the BIOS to make it running at 2000 Mhz ?

      Thanks.

Tweaking will be required, will want the latest BIOS and will require an OC (even for 2000) so be prepared to tweak it some

          Ok thank you.

If I want to have no tweak, does this kit is better ?
          http://www.materiel.net/barrette-mem...as9-75942.html

or it will need tweaks too ? (like timings set manually).

I think I will take a Ripjaw kit, Ares seems a bit too complicated with X58 for myself, I hate BIOS.

          Ty.

Anything DDR3-1600+ will require tweak, but the higher the frequency, the more tweak you need.

So DDR3-1866 is easier than DDR3-2133

BUT, you can purchase DDR3-2133 to operate at DDR3-1866 with lower timings. That is the benefit of purchasing memory better* than what your system can support.

            Thank you

Thank you very much for the support.

To conclude, I think I will buy this kit :
              http://www.materiel.net/barrette-mem...as8-75939.html

which will not required tweak I think (1600 Mhz) and will work with P6T.
I would like an Ares kit, because the height is good.

If you confirm me it wont need tweaks, I buy it.

              Thank you .

For max performance, you need to input settings, but it will not need OC tweaks. It takes a couple minutes, not hours.

                Thank you

                    Hello,

I finally bought this kit :
                    http://www.materiel.net/barrette-mem...as9-75944.html

as you told me, I have a high frequency kit and I can make it running at 1600 to 2000 Mhz to have less tweaks to do.

I contacted G.Skill support by mail and they told me this :
The kit should works perfectly fine at 2000 MHz Tri-Channel with manual bios configuration, may try the timing 9-11-10-28-2N 1.65V as well, thank you
So, I installed the kit, I'm in BIOS right now and I have some problems (as I'm a noob...).

                    - for timings, I want to set 9-11-10-28-2N. If I'm not wrong, these are : "CL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS-CMD". I cant set tRCD to 11 (max is 10) and tRAS to 28 (max is 17).
                    - I dont understand DRAM frequency, I have this :

                    - auto
                    - DDR3-1083 MHz
                    - DDR3-1443 MHz
                    - DDR3-1804 MHz
                    - DDR3-2165 MHz
                    - DDR3-2525 MHz
                    - DDR3-2887 MHz
                    - DDR3-3248 MHz
I dont understand what to choose.

Then, I think I have to set DRAM Bus Voltage to 1.65V, but what for QPI/DRAM Core Voltage ? (he is on "auto" by default)

I think I'll need to rund my kit at 1600 or 1800, which is not a problem if needed but I dont know what to set -_- .

                    Thank you.

edit : woot, what a noob ! This is my OC which causes me trouble. So I should remove it first I think, but there is a "XMP" mode in "Ai Overclock Tuner" with 2 profiles and settings with 1.66V and timings, and 2133 Mhz.
Should I use that ? Ty.

Check first to see if you have the latest BIOS
