  • Dual vs Quad Channel

I am trying to find ram to run at 2133 or better, but all I can find is Quad channel.
    My MB is a MSI Z68A-GD80 (G3)
Will the quad channel run on a dual channel MB but just in dual channel mode or is it just incompatible?

I'd appreciate an education on this.

    Thanks!

The Ripjaws Z models are designed and optimized for true Quad channel (X79) systems, so you may want to look at the Ripjaws X line (designed for Sandy Bridge, Z68/P67/H67) or the Snipers.....of the three shown in the below link the Snipers @ CL9 would be the highest performance:

      Thank you.
I looked up your reference on Newegg and it said they were Quad channel.

What is the difference between the "X" series and the "Sniper" series?

Will the Quad channel for the Ivy Bridge work in a dual channel baord for the Z68? or are they totally incompatable.

That's just how they list a four stick set, if you look at the RipjawsX in specs you should see they are designed for the P67/Z68/H67 chipsets, which are DUAL channel, the RipjawsZ sets are true Quad Channel (though they will work on a DUAL channel mobo), the Snipers are all round sets, though the 2 and 4 stick sets are designed for dual channel ops (might even look at 4 stick sets in DDR2 (which was exclusive single/dual, no Tri or Quad channel) and find that they list 4 stick sets as quad channel). In addition to the above explanation the Snipers and RipjawsX use different chips and are programmed differently in the SPD (i.e. the XMP settings)
