  • What's the difference between different models with the same spec?

    Hi

I will be buying G Skill memory next week, but prior to that I want to ask you for an advice on two things.
My comp spec is as follows:
    Motherboard - ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition
Graphics card: Zotac Geforce GTX 570 AMP! Edition
    Cooler: Scythe Ninja 3
System hard drive: OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD - 120 GB

    1. What is the difference between these models with the same speed and latencies?
    [ SNIPER ] F3-12800CL7D-8GBSR http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=386]
    [ RipjawsX ] F3-12800CL7D-8GBXH http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=357]
    [ Ripjaws ] F3-12800CL7D-8GBRH http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=317]

    or these

    [ RipjawsX ] F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=356]
    [ Ripjaws ] F3-12800CL8D-8GBRM http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=318]

and which ones are recommended for my system build? The thing I need to improve is the gaming quality and overall performance with few applications opened.

    2. Will it make a real, noticable difference for my build, if I buy CAS 8 instead of CAS 7 memory from the models above? I will be manually overclocking them to achieve better performance (I guess with that spec I need to do it manually anyway).
Or maybe shall I go for CAS 6 and buy 2x [ RipjawsX ] F3-12800CL6D-4GBXH and use all 4 memory slots?
Or maybe I'm totally wrong and for my build you recommend completely different type? I can already tell that Flare models won't fit under Scythe Ninja 3 cooler and are unfortunately too expensive (at least in my country)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Of the three CL7 models you list the Ripjaws have been around the longest, the newer Ripjaws X are designed around the P67, Z68 chipsets and the Snipers are sort of an in between,,,,,all three sets pretty much work with anything you want to put them in and all work well with AMD mobos, as long as you have a CPU that can run the speed (which your 1100T should handle).

The second two sets are CL8, and the same as above applies as far as the Ripjaws and newer Ripjaws X lines.

Since it's AMD, they have to be set up manually at 1600 and above anyway, the better performance would come from CL7, though to 'see' it, it will be on benchmarks scores. CL6 would be pushing it, since AMD has a weak MC (Memory Controller), best best for 16GB of 1600 sticks would be a CL8 or CL9 set (and then as a single 16GB set, mixing two 8GB sets, even of the same model can be problematic on and mobo, but even more so at higher speeds and in particular on an AMD mobo/CPU setup

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I have made a decision to go with
      [ RipjawsX ] F3-12800CL7D-8GBXH http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=357]

As far as I understand this memory will work on CAS Latency 7 when I overclock it to 1600, as default setting on my mobo is 1333.

My last question will be than: at which OC settings will I achieve the best performace on my platform?

That's totally up to you, the sticks should be able to handle about anything the 1100T wants to run at, I've had this set easily at 1866 and up with CL8 and 2000 at a loose CL9 (though that was on an Intel Platform)
