  • G.skill f3-17600CL7 memory help

I cannot get my x.m.p profile to run this memory at its rated speed without running ridiculously high voltages 1.7+dram bus.

This ram is hardly plug and play my asus iii formula supports this ram and x.m.p.

If there is a way to get this ram to operate at its rated frequency "safely" I would like a step by step process showing me how.

This is a random template of my bios with settings that do not reflect my own but ill fill in settings i know off the top of my head. you can use this template to help guide me to set this ram up properly.
My dram bus voltage is 1.6 dram core 1.42 . at 1.65 it will not go past 1900 mhz.

For 1800 you'll need an uncore speed of 3600 or slightly more, DRAM voltage for these sticks is 1.65, CR (Timing mode) should be at 2N you are at 1N

excuse me? X.M.P. Clearly states this ram should run at 2200 1T timing mode.

Why are you telling me what i need to run my ram at 1800 mhz? I have it stable at 1800 mhz at 3.4 mhz and 1T timing. So why would i need to change my core clock to reach 1800 mhz that i am already running stable at?

My question was clear. What do i have to do to run my ram at 2200 mhz. Also why do i need to set it to 2T when the X.M.P profile says otherwise? Are these X.M.P. Profiles not accurate? If so is this something that should be included in a bios update?

Do you have the latest BIOS? The sticks themselves are specced to 2T (2N) see GSkill or even NewEgg

        http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=251
        http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231322

The Bios may not be interpreting the sticks correctly since by default it's a triple channel mobo, and they are going to concentrate the BIOS updates and settings towards triple channel, also the DRAM and it's settings are geared to the P55 chipset (yours is X58) as also shown above in the GSkill and NewEgg specs.

When trying to help with setups that are similar to yours I try to start with the basics for your sticks and mobo for 2200 I would start with an uncore of 4400, DRAM voltage from 1.65 (spec) to 1.7, timings of 7-10-10-28, CR 2N (or T)....and work with the voltages and timings from there, the normal DRAM setup for these sticks at 1800 on a P55 looks for an uncore of 3600.

GSkill did/does have the F3-17600CL8D-4GBPS sticks (Perfect Storm vs the PIs you have) that is on the ASUS QVL and run at CL8 as opposed to your sticks CL7 @ 2200, but trying to get your set to run on the X58 will take some experimenting if we can get it to run at 2200.

Nice reply Tman according to his sig. that OC i7 950 sure does run slow 3.37 mhz

i believe 4400 would be impractical even with my eco coolit. By uncore you mean core clock?I'm a noob when it comes to these things.

I can probably achieve 3600 without much issue. Is my BCLK good where it is at and should I just focus on my multiplier?

I believe the S.P.D. profile is read from the memory itself? so the programed X.M.P on the ram is wrong from listed specs? So this would be an issue with the memory and not the bios?

Ive looked at bios updates for my board there was a memory recheck feature added and the rest are just cpu support updates for 980+ chips. I can flash it, but I'm not sure what the memory recheck feature even is? Troubleshooting option maybe I'm not sure if its relevant to what I'm trying to do.

Hey there Wldman! How's your system going? Ready for that monster monitor yet?

Anyway, here speed definitely needs to go up for 2200, it's OC DRAM and extremely high performance, would be nice if I was GSkill and had their lab available, it just can be real hard to take DRAM that is specifically set up for a chipset and even specific CPUs (here the i7 860 and 870) and get it to run at the high performance speed in another cpu/chipset combo.

Great, i am surprised everyone seems to have problems running 4 x 4gb modules. not yet on the monitor

what option do i adjust to change my uncore? I don't see a uncore option in my bios which i assume is separate from the core.

Ok, i was confused because you mentioned my uncore had to be twice as high as my ram. My bios automaticly sets uncore twice that of the ram, so its an option i do not need to bother with unless i want to set it manually but I don't see a reason to.

So its not my core speed that is the issue here correct? My uncore is autoamticly set correctly and yet i cant get this computer to run the ram above 1900 mhz without increasing the Dimm voltage beyong 1.65.

This seems to be the only issue for me, like i mentioned before i have had this machine stable at 2100 mhz . But the voltage it requires from the dimms is great then 1.7v NOT 1.65 as listed in the specs of this ram.

Unless changing my BCLK and qpi voltage accordingly can stabilize the memory at those clocks... I don't know... but i would hope you would.

You can experiment w/ the BCLK/multiplier combos and voltages and may want to start at 2133 with maybe timings of 9-9-9-28, in your instance with those particular sticks and then your mobo/CPU combo, as said earlier, it may well be very hard....the XMP timings are indeed programmed onto the sticks via the SPD, but keep in mind the BIOS has to compare those to what is available within the BIOS programming itself, sort of matching 1 table of figures to another and if they don't have a match they have to either go to the next higher settings or next lower in the BIOS, which the sticks might not want to run at (one of the reasons that the newer mobos get BIOS updates more frequently than in years past due to the proliferation of newer DRAM and higher performance sticks becoming available)....Also of note in the suggestion to upgrade the BIOS, what you see when a new version is released is normally the PRIMARY reason for the new release and doesn't touch on everything else that may be included in the BIOS update - generally every BIOS update will contain updates to memory compatibility as they get new sticks to test with the mobos.
