  • Dual channel question

Hey guys, I orignially had 2 sticks of the Ripjaws 12800 CL9 RAM in 2 of the 4 RAM slots.
I recently picked up 2 more sticks and have all 4 slots occupied. With 2 sticks of RAM the Boot screen used to mention Dual channel and now it does not. However CPUZ says dual channel. Is my system still running Dual channel? Can someone shed a little light?
    Thanks in advance, Pete

    System specs are:
    AMD Phenom X4 965 Black 124 Watt
    Gigabyte GA-MA 790XT UD4P
    XFX ATI 5770
    8 GB F3 12800 CL9 GSkill Ripjaws

If CPUz reports dual channel operation then I would be inclined to agree with it. Not quite sure why it disappeared from your BIOS startup screen though.

If you have any doubts, clear your cmos and reload the defaults, save changes and exit.

See if you get the dual channel message at the BIOS boot.

Another way to check is to run a bandwidth test using Sisoft Sandra or Everest.

Thanks wevsspot. Sisoft Sandra doesn't list dual channel and neither does Everest.
I'll try clearing the CMOS tonight and I'll let ya know how it goes.

        Sounds like a good plan.

Let me know how that goes.

Well I did the CMOS clear and reset everything and stiil Dual channel is not reported on the post screen. CPUz does say Dual channel with all the timings so i guess it is in Dual channel.

                  Ok,

That looks great. If memory serves me correctly the max peak bandwidth of DDR3 1600 is 12,800 MB/s

So running in dual channel (theoretically) your bandwidth should be doubled.

                  12800*2 = 25600

Your screen shot shows 25,712 MB/s

I don't think you have anything to worry about

                    Yes you're right. DDR3 1600 is 12800 MB/s RAM
Thanks for your help wevsspot I really appreciate you taking the time to get back to me.
My timings are 9-9-9-24 and I'm running 1.62 volts. (motherboard won't let me get the voltage any lower). It was unstable until I raised the CPU NB voltage 1 click. Now it's rock solid and Prime 95 shows no errors at all and Memtest shows no errors either. I'm also running the GSkill single fan cooler. Looks pretty neat.
                    I'm a happy camper.
