  • RAM Advice please

Hi there, im building a new system with the current specs:
    MSI 790FX-GD70 Motherboard
    AMD X4 965 BE 3.4Ghz
    2 x Radeon HD4890
    2x WD VelociRaptors in RAID
    2x Samsung 1TB Drives
    Corsair HX1000W Power Supply

I was going to be using the G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH) [F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH] times two for my RAM how ever i cannot find any stock anywhere. My question is this, could i use the higher rated 2000mhz modules and underclock them to 1600mhz and get 7-7-7-24 timings? (or even better) Im a complete noob when it comes to over/underclocking RAM. As a side note my MOBO states it supports up to 2133mhz Memory but i cant find what voltage is supported.

Oh and im located in the UK, with Overclockers being the only company i could find supplying G.Skill Products (albeit not many unfortunately).

Thanks in advance for any help!

2000 should work fine downclocked to 1600, prob be able to get 7-7-7-21 or better. Your mobo is actually rated up to 2133 (on an OC), so with a healthy OC you could prob get all 8 to even 1800 or better, will take some time to get your timings down and stable.

Thanks Tradesman, thats reassuring, the only other memory i could find is G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH) [F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH]. luckily its the same price as the 1600. I intend on aiming for 4.0Ghz as that has been achieved often with the 965. Il order the ram with the rest of my system wednesday and post back with my results
