  • 8GB RAM Suggestions for GA-EP45-UD3R Rev1

I was looking for recommendations for 8GB (4x2GB) of G.Skill RAM for my EP45-UD3R Rev1.

I will be doing some air overclocking on my E6550, so the RAM will need to be able to take some oc'ing.

I'm currently looking at the following kits:

    G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B - Retail

    G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail

Basically I'm not sure if I want DDR2 800 or 1066 and if either will take oc'ing well with 4 sticks total.

    Specs:
    Core2Duo E6550
    GA-EP45-UD3R Rev1 (Bios F11)
    Nanya 4x1GB (current)
    BFG 8800GT OC

    Thanks!

Well, what is your target memory frequency? 8GB of DDR2-800 and 8GB of DDR2-1066 is completely different. If price is a factor which is the reason why you chose the following two packages, then I would suggest the PK. The PK is already 1066, and you could reduce timings if you are within the DDR2-900 range. On the other hand, the DDR2-800 CL4 is nice and may overclock to 850-900, but it can not operate much higher than that. So if you are looking for max speed between the two, PK is the way to go.

    Thank you

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!

To be honest I don't know what frequency I'm looking to hit because I haven't oc'd this CPU yet. I guess I should just hedge my bets and go with the PK then.

      Thanks so much!

3.2GHz processor, DDR2-1066 with 8GB, that's a pretty solid goal for this setup.

If you go up to 3.2 may want to get a third party heatsink, with the stock those start getting real warm about 3 GHz, also, I agree the PK is prob your best bet

Thanks for the tip, I'm actually planning on getting a Xigmatek Dark Knight.

Haven't had a chance to work with one, but have gotten feedback from a couple of other builders, think you'll be happy with it, going over 3 shouldn't be any problem. Keep in mind letting your thermal compound cure for a week or so before heavy OCing.

Well I received a 4GB set of the PK RAM this weekend and am having issues, I posted in the F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK + GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P / R BIOS settings thread.

Did you enter the timings manually, voltage 2.1, XMP off, command rate 2T.

Yup, entered all that manually. Not sure what XMP is though, I don't see any mention of it in that thread.

Sorry for taking so long to post, it's been a bit hectic with the holidays. I did get my other 4GB pack this weekend from my in-laws so when I get home on Monday night I'll have some time to really look into this.

Also, the Windows memory diagnostic came back with no problems...though the computer did lock up and need a hard reboot at one point. Something is still flaky with one of the original sticks.

If you can post your BIOS settings it would help, also do you have the UD3R (originally posted) or the the UD3P (mentioned in another post - they are 2 different mobos and have their own idiosyncrasies

Got my other 4GB so now I'm running 8GB in my system and now I can't get past the post screen, the system just keeps rebooting itself and I get a message in the BIOS that my system was rebooted due to overvoltage.

I've pulled 2 of the sticks just so I can get into the BIOS and my settings are as follows:
